But no matter how it seems; no achievement is an overnight success, we talk to the girls about their hard work and what they did to get to where they are today.
‘We were just two friends who loved to workout.’
What gave you the idea for your business?
Yvette: Before going into business together we were just two friends who loved to workout. We always believed that exercise should be fun and enjoyable and I think that definitely translated when we started blogging our workouts over a year ago. The response was really motivating so we kept going and it developed from there.
Have you always been super fit?
Yvette: Both of us have definitely been active from a young age. Not so much sport, but I started dancing lessons at four years old and grew up taking lots of classes in ballet, jazz and tap-dancing a right up until I was 18 years old.
Vanessa: I grew up doing everything from gymnastics to touch football to netball and athletics. But right now I’m very into my weight-training.
What annoys the hell out of you?
Yvette: In regards to Sculpt Sisters there have been many occasions, mainly on Facebook, where our videos get shared on big pages internationally without crediting us at all. It’s frustrating as it could be great exposure for us. We have had to write countless emails asking people to please credit us correctly if they use our workouts on their pages and often our emails are ignored.
Yvette: We are constantly writing down ideas as soon as they pop into our heads or whenever we get inspired by something. Then we have a weekly meet up and go through all of the content together. We bounce ideas off each other and have little brainstorm sessions about what could work well.
‘Creating good content is more than just a selfie, there is a lot of planning & preparation that goes into it.’
How long does it take to create your videos and what’s the process?
It used to take a while to get good ideas flowing but we’ve been doing this for a while now and we are becoming more efficient at knowing our demographic and what they want to see, so it’s getting easier. Creating good content is more than just a selfie, there is a lot of planning and preparation that goes into it. We’re really lucky that we have similar training styles and we usually get our videos and choreography perfect in just one take.
How do you come up with all your different routines?
Yvette: Trial and error! Both of us have a lot of input. Between us we teach many sculpting, toning and cardio classes each week as well as pilates, barre, yoga and weight training. With that in mind, it’s easy to get creative and create fusions of all of the classes we teach.
In order to keep growing and improving we continue to educate ourselves with the latest training techniques available. It’s really important in business that you’re constantly moving forward otherwise what you teach may not be relevant. We are always taking courses to update our knowledge and skills which we then bring to all our classes and Sculpt Sister workouts.
What do you both bring to the business?
Yvette: I look after the creative side of the business and our social media. This involves Instagram and Facebook posts, sourcing photos and providing inspiring content.
Vanessa: I handle all of our PR, our networking as well as dealing with all of the active wear companies we are ambassadors for. We have been sponsored and have promoted active wear for more than 30 amazing companies in the last 12 months. It’s really exciting to be chosen as it’s such a competitive market.
Yvette: Vanessa’s fiancé David is our amazing video editor who is an incredibly hard worker and my husband Craig deals with all the business side including, lawyers, accountants and the website designers. We are all very close so it’s nice to have that support from each other and that has been the key to our success so far.
You guys have over 100k followers on Instagram, how did you build such a following and in what time? What advice would you give to someone who’s trying to grow their brand?
Yvette: It’s incredibly important to figure out exactly who your audience is and what you can offer them. As soon as you know this, it becomes easier as you have an objective to work towards. As soon as you start to steer off track, you can remind yourself what the focus is. We have been very fortunate to have had many of our videos gone absolutely viral and shared around on many fitness sites. This directs traffic to our Instagram and grows our following. It all starts with tagging and hash-tagging your audience into your posts, it’s becoming easier and easier to reach more people.
What has it been like running your own business?
Yvette: It’s full on. We all work full-time. Sculpt sisters was just a hobby on the side but the bigger it grows, the more time we like to spend on it. Now that we are starting to get paid for what we do, we are excited to do more and more.
What has been the most satisfying thing about accomplishing things you set out to do?
Yvette: The most satisfying and rewarding thing of all is the lovely comments, messages and emails we get from our amazing followers. They write to us telling us we have helped them, inspired them or motivated them to live a healthier or more active lifestyle. We feel so accomplished to know this. This is what is has always been about, helping others!
How would your best friends describe you?
Vanessa: Fun, silly, crazy, trustworthy, honest, sporty, inspiring,
What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their fitness journey?
Vanessa: Remind yourself that everyone has been a beginner at one stage. No matter what age, weight or fitness level you are, don’t let negative thoughts such as ‘I’m too old’ or ‘it’s too late’ dictate your mission towards what you really want. Make peace with the fact that now is exactly your time. Set goals and accomplish them, one at a time. Then demolish them and and set some more.
‘We are still just two normal girls. We drink wine, we eat cheese & we order takeaway.’
With so many other fitness personalities out there, you have both done incredibly well, what do you credit that to? How did you separate yourself from the rest?
Vanessa: I think being ourselves and being happy shines through in our posts. We try to show everyone that even though we love our training, we are still just two normal girls. We drink wine, we eat cheese and we order takeaway. Our posts are always fun because there are two of us and we can bounce off each other. We want women to feel more confident going into the gym, and what better way than to have your best friend come along with you.
What’s the most valuable skill set someone can have in life?
Vanessa: Passion! I’m not sure if that is a skill-set (laughs) but if you are passionate about something then you can achieve it and you won’t stop until you have reached your goals! Without passion, it’s too easy to give up when things get hard.
There’s a quote which says ‘You Are the Average of the 5 people you spend the most time with’ How true do you think this is?
Vanessa: We agree with this one hundred percent! That’s why it’s so important to surround yourself with like-minded and positive people.
What’s coming up for Sculpt sisters that we can look forward to in the future?
We have so many exciting projects in the making but one that we can tell you is our website that will be launching very soon! it will have absolutely everything from training plans to posture and mobility workouts. We have been working hard on it for 10 months now, so we are really excited for the launch!
What advice would you give to someone who has an idea but isn’t sure where to start or what to do next?
A really good idea is to find someone who is going something similar and look at what they’re doing and how they’re doing it. Approach others in the same field and ask if you can take them out for a coffee so you can pick their brains about what worked, what didn’t work and how they got there. Advice like this can be really valuable to guide you in the right direction and help you avoid mistakes that other people have made. It’s all about reaching out and learning along the way.
